Abstract: The article is devoted to Yu. M. Butsko’s oratorio «The Legend of the Pugachev Rebellion». For the first time, an attempt is made to consider the reasons that prompted the composer to turn to the historical chronicle of A. S. Pushkin, to comprehend the problem of choosing a literary source. As a result of the research, conclusions are drawn that, having given preference to Pushkin’s «Pugachev’s History», Yu. M. Butsko proved himself as an author, on the one hand, gravitating towards historical authenticity, and on the other hand — as a composer of religious orientation. These essential features of Butsko’s creative personality are manifested on the conceptual, dramatic and musical levels of the composition under consideration.
