Irina Samoilovna Stogniy is a graduate of the Gnesins Russian Academy of Music, a Doctor of Art Studies and Professor in the Academy’s Department of Analytical Musicology.
In 1986 she defended her Kandidat thesis, «The Idea of the Invariant in the Concept of Musical Language», at the Leningrad Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. In 2013 she defended her doctoral dissertation, «Processes of Meaning Formation in Music: The Semiological Dimension», at the Gnesins Russian Academy of Music. She has worked at the Academy since 1987.
Prof. Stogniy has written more than 60 works devoted to current musical-theoretical issues, including the monograph Connotative Properties of the Musical Text (Moscow: RGMA, 2013). Special attention in these works is devoted to issues of musical language and musical semantics. Prof. Stogniy actively participates in conferences organized by other institutions, including the Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky State Conservatory, the Ippolitov-Ivanov State Musical Pedagogical Institute, the Rachmaninoff Rostov State Conservatory, the Astrakhan State Conservatory and the Maimonid State Classical Academy. She often serves as an official opponent for dissertation councils (3-4 times annually), reviews scholarly publications and gives lectures in professional development courses for teachers at musical education institutions.
Over many years Prof. Stogniy has been the initiator of a series of research projects, including cycles of musical convocations and such scholarly-practical conferences as «The Semantics of Musical Language», «Christian Images in Art», and «Problems of Artistic Interpretation». Conference proceedings have resulted in various collections (10 books in all) in which Prof. Stogniy has served as editor-compiler and article contributor. In 2012 she organized the national conference «Spiritual Culture: Reality, Tasks and Prospects» in Khabarovsk.
In 2013, Prof. Stogniy was presented with an award by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation for her «high level of pedagogical, organizational and creative work and great contribution to the professional education of musicians».
