S. V. Rachmaninov in the D. V. Zhitomirsky’s materials from the 1930s–1950s

Abstract: The problem of the introducing some new parts into the training course of the history of Russian music raised in the article. It has been developing as a subject over the chronological period indicated in the title. One of the leading figures of Russian composer’s school used as an example for the work. Notes, transcripts and publications from the period of D. V. Zhitomirsky’s teaching career at the Moscow, and later at the Baku and Gorky Conservatories, are brought into scientific consideration for the first time. They illustrate the multifaceted complexity of dealing with an object that is changing its status before our eyes and moving from the category of the semi-forbidden to the realm of undisputed classics. The main point on the concept of Rachmaninov’s work relied of the concert capacity as a characteristic type of utterance, implying a special degree of expression and allowing for the achievement of the highest dramatic tension in small forms and chamber genres.
