Abstract: This article analyzes the current state of Broadway musical theater, which the authors have defined as an «Age of Turbulence». The authors were able to personally familiarize themselves with almost the entire repertoire performing on identify key trends in the development of the musical genre today.
One of the innovations of the article is an attempt to systematize the modern Broadway repertoire. The authors offer a conditional classification of performances. The first group includes «family» musicals (created by Disney); the second group includes long-established classic or benchmark productions; the third group includes jukebox musicals (based on well-known pop songs); and finally, a separate group comprises so-called conceptual musicals (such as «Hamilton» and «Hadestown»). Furthermore, the list of productions also includes several fundamentally new original works.
Based on the analysis, conclusions were drawn about the politicization of many modern Broadway performances, which negatively affects, first of all, the artistic content of the works.
