Abstract: The article is devoted to Musikalisches Kunstmagazin (MKM), one of the most significant works of the classical era composer and music critic Johann Friedrich Reichardt. The article examines the journal’s structure, which included a number of regular features, such as «Merkwürdige Stücke großer Meister verschiedener Zeiten und Völker» («Remarkable Works of the Great Masters from different times and nations»), «Neue merkwürdige musikalische Werke» («Noteworthy New Music Pieces») and «Fingerzeige für den denkenden und forschenden deutschen Tonkünstler» («A Guide for Thoughtful and Inquiring German Composers») with occasional sections reflecting music life of interest to the editor. Particular attention is given to the style of Reichardt’s critical writings, characterized by their vividness, imaginative quality and expressive language. His categorical judgments and emotional commentaries were accompanied by a consistent promotion of the contemporary general aesthetic, as well by a desire to cultivate good taste and the ability to identify the criteria of a work’s artistic value in his readers — enlightened music amateurs.
