Abstract: The article is devoted to two types of folk theater in Vietnam, Сheo and Tuong, that prepared the country’s musical culture for mastering the genre of Europen-style opera. The similarities and differences in their aesthetics and dramatic principles are outlined. The issues of the repertoire of theaters are considered, the main plot motives of the performances are highlighted. The role of music in the performances of Chao and Tuong, its specific genre forms is considered. The national aspects of music in the plays of Cheo and Tuong are emphasized, as well as the compositional features that resonate with some principles of the opera genre.
