Abstract: The article is devoted to the activities of the outstanding bayan player Alexander Vladimirovich Sklyarov (1949–2023). It attempts to recreate Sklyarov’s portrait as a performer, characterize his dominant professional and ideological orientations, and reconstruct his creative ideas. Individual examples reveal the facets of the artist’s performing skills, the original features of his individual handwriting, the means of intonation, sound production, agogy, interpretation, and specific plasticity in the transmission of sound fabric, largely due to the natural properties of the accordion player’s technical apparatus. A special manner of working with sound is noted, as well as an impeccable command of the bayan’s diverse timbre capabilities, reflecting a diverse palette of emotional and imaginative states. Emphasizing the phenomenal virtuosity of the musician, the author of the article emphasizes its relationship with the unique ability to “speak” on the instrument using elements of improvisation. The purpose of this publication is to show the scale of the creative achievements of one of the outstanding representatives of the Russian bayan school and to make them accessible to the general musical community.
