«When Moszkowski became affordable» (from the correspondence between M. Moszkowski and M. Abraham)

Abstract: For the first time in Russian musicology, this article presents materials from the correspondence between the composer Moritz Moszkowski (1864–1925) and Max Abraham (1831–1900), director of the Leipzig publishing house C. F. Peters, which published the composer’s works during most of his career. The article also provides some biographical information about the publisher. The excerpts from the correspondence presented in the article, relating to the initial period of Moszkowski’s creative collaboration with Abraham, are connected with the history of the creation and publication of two landmark works — Caprice espagnol op. 37 and Guitarre op. 45 No. 2. The article concludes that Moszkowski, having found in Abraham both a partner and a like-minded supporter, belonged in this respect to the group of “fortunate” composers.
