Abstract: C. Monteverdi’s creative legacy, despite 400 years of distance from us in time, in many respects retains its enduring artistic value and demands a return to it because of its many instructive lessons for modern times. There is a need to give a concise overview of the most significant factors determining the most essential parameters of the composer’s individual style — the contours of the concept of Baroque musical art that was taking shape at the beginning of the 17th century. Based on this paradigm, the proposed article consecutively examines the three most important genre groups of works: sacred music, madrigals and operas. In each of these arrays, the leading figurative, semantic and stylistic contours are identified, the focus is on the innovative reformation of these genres, which determined the historical significance of what the composer did both for his own time and for the distant future. The foregoing allows us to conclude that Monteverdi was a leading master among those who opened up the horizons of the musical of Baroque music.
