Abstract: The article is devoted to the music of Philipp Jarnach, the German composer of French origin. The Neoclassical tendencies in German music are researched in this article by the example of Jarnach’s Sonatina for flute and piano op. 12. Philipp Jarnach studied composition with Feruccio Busoni just as Busoni declared the appeal to so called «Young Classicism» («Junge Klassizität») in his open letter to musicologist Paul Bekker. The composers, who were influenced by Neoclassical tendencies of 1920-s, opposed tnemselves to Romanticism on the one hand and to Expressionism on the other. The aesthetic ideas of Neoclassicism as a new style in German music of 1920-s were reflected in the music by Jarnach. The article provides the analysis of the main compositional tools used by Jarnach in his Sonatina for flute and piano. The connection of the Sonatina with the music of past eras (Baroque and First Viennese School) is considered, including at the level of music form, texture and harmony. Studying Jarnach’s music is important for understanding the tendencies in German music between the First and the Second World Wars
