Abstract: The article explores the phenomenon of «time scale» in relation to the new scientific work of the Russian composer Czo Zhenguan «Musical Culture of China: Essays» (2023). The connection between this work and his research on the history of Russo-Chinese musical connections «Russian Musicians in China» (2014) is emphasized. Together, they represent a «double portrait» of the musical culture of the Celestial Empire, with its national genres, the musical-theoretical system of lü, traditional instruments, creative collectives, educational institutions, composers and performers, as well as the influence of foreign (European and Soviet) masters of musical art who brought the experience of their countries. It is noted that both monographs are distinguished by their fundamental nature, broad coverage of phenomena in musical culture, and excellent literary style, which allows us to speak of them as «scientific works» (T. I. Naumenko) deserving serious attention. Keywords: мusical culture of China, historical integrity, principles of retrospection and prospect, «time scale» and its disclosure in a scholarly text For citation: Romashchuk I.
