Abstract: The article traces the history of the performance and staging of M. I. Glinka’s operas in the Siberian cities of Tobolsk, Tomsk and Irkutsk in the last third of the XIX century through the prism of musical and critical reception. The material is provided by the most representative publications in the regional press — the government newspaper «Tobolsk Provincial Vedomosti» and private publications «Siberian Bulletin» and «Eastern Review».
Reviews of concerts are considered, in which solo and choral fragments of Glinka’s operatic masterpieces were performed. In connection with the 50th anniversary of the premiere of «A Life for the Tsar» in 1886, attention is focused on the educational article «Musical Jubilee» by the Tomsk figure G. S. Tomashinsky. Two reviews of the Irkutsk critic «Incognito» on productions of the opera «Ruslan and Lyudmila» in 1900 are analyzed.
As a conclusion, the article notes that the appearance of Glinka’s operas in the musical life of Siberian centers began with the amateur performance of fragments from «A Life for the Tsar», while productions of integral performances by professional opera companies have been recorded in the press since the mid-1890s. This is the first time that a similar perspective of the study of the performing fate of Glinka’s operas in Siberia has been proposed. Keywords: M. I.
