Abstract: The article is dedicated to the virtually unknown comic opera by A. N. Verstovsky «Homesickness» (1839). The composition attracts attention not only with its specific, uncharacteristic for the composer, style (in terms of genre inclination, setting, and time of action), but also because it reflected and anticipated the tendencies of its time: Verstovsky was one of the first Russian composers to turn to Spanish images. The article attempts to identify the particularities of the musical embodiment of Russian and Spanish cultural images in the opera «Homesickness», as well as to determine possible links of the composition with the operas of Auber, Donizetti, and other composers who used Spanish plots and local color.

Keywords: «Homesickness», Russia, Spain, A. Verstovsky, 19th century, national tradition
